Maritime Education Manager (Year Round)

The Maritime Education Manager is responsible for implementing the educational programs and activities in our partnership with Maritime High School (MHS). They provide leadership, mentorship, and support to the team of Northwest Maritime’s (NWM) instructors, ensuring the quality and effectiveness of educational delivery and other elements of our partnership.  This will range from overseeing grant deliverables to sustaining our industry partnerships via a mentorship program.  They will collaborate with MHS stakeholders to design and adapt curriculum, assess student learning, and monitor program outcomes, as well as provide direct instruction to MHS students on and off the water. 


The ideal candidate brings a blend of experience in day-to-day operations of education programs and an ability to initiate and support systems and processes to ensure the sustainability and growth of our program at MHS. This position collaborates with and supports the Maritime Program Manager, tasked with managing integrated partnerships and strategic thinking for this innovative maritime education project. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

MHS Program  Leadership

  • Supervise a team of 2 NWM instructors to provide transformative maritime experiences for MHS students

  • Foster a work environment where collaboration, open communication, frequent exchange of ideas, and teamwork inspire staff

  • Empower the NWM’s MHS teams in their responsibilities by delegating tasks with clear goals, deadlines, and feedback and knowing when to collaborate and problem-solve proactively

  • Collaborate with NWM’s Grants Manager, Grants Analyst, Deputy Program Director, and HPS personnel to manage implementation of and reporting on MHS grant funding 

  • Collaborate with the Maritime Program Manager, MHS Principal, and other HPS/MHS staff & leadership to support the success of the school, and in alignment with our partnership agreement


Program Development and Implementation 

  • Work with Maritime Program Manager to identify and develop curriculum standards and educational best practices needed for 9th & 10th graders as part of the Career Connected Learning progression, which involves industry-engaged programmatic activities such as career exploration conversations, mentorships, workplace-based learning experiences, and internships

  • Support the MHS Program Manager in working closely with NWM leadership to establish evaluation criteria to track the success of our MHS Program

  • Provide direct instruction for our MHS programs, specifically 9th & 10th grade but also 11th & 12th, if needed


Program Operations

  • Ensure adherence to all risk reduction and emergency response policies and preparedness, as directed by Highline Public Schools, NWM, and industry and community partners

  • Manage purchases and expense tracking for the use and care of all program supplies, tools, and equipment for NWM activities at MHS

  • Oversee NWM-supported fieldwork coordination and scheduling in coordination with HPS staff & processes

  • Coordinate with NWM Waterfront Program Manager on any vessel transits, maintenance, and moorage 


GENERAL OPERATIONS

While this position focuses on instructional leadership and program implementation, the Maritime Education Manager works as part of the entire NWM team, ensuring smooth operations. As a growing non-profit, we all pitch in for the heavy lifting, whether it's participating in all-hands projects and events, assisting visitors, or occasionally doing some literal heavy lifting.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proven work experience as a team leader with excellent communication skills, strong organizational and systems thinking skills as well as problem-solving and time-management skills

  • Ability to design and facilitate engaging, rigorous, and inclusive participatory education and/or Project Based Learning experiences.

  • Demonstrated experience in the maritime field 

  • Demonstrated program development, curriculum development, and/or leadership experience in an educational setting

  • Current first aid/CPR or training plan to achieve this certification

  • Ability to lift and carry gear up to 50lbs

  • Work offers are contingent on a satisfactory pre-employment background check and drug test. Throughout employment with the Northwest Maritime, certain boat-based program employees will be enrolled in a random drug testing program administered by the Maritime Consortium, in compliance with the Coast Guard mandatory drug testing regulation, as contained in 46 CFR part 16


HELPFUL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Teaching experience, preferably in a high school setting, with experience in project-based learning methodologies

  • Skilled in differentiating instruction to meet diverse student needs and learning styles.

  • Experience in workforce development programs and/or knowledge of the career & technical education landscape in WA state

  • Experience working in an integrated partnership 

  • Understanding of and relationships with the communities served by Maritime High School

  • Relevant experience in Puget Sound waters 

  • Experience with outboard engines and small boat operations

  • Experience with grant management & reporting

  • Spanish language skills

WORK LOCATION & SCHEDULE

  • Position will require onsite work at Maritime High School located at 615 S 200th St, Des Moines, WA 98198

  • Occasional work at NWM main offices, located at 431 Water St., Port Townsend, WA 98368

  • Position is full time, 40 hours/week

  • Reports to: Maritime Program Manager


WAGE RANGE & BENEFITS

  • $26 - $32 per hour, non-exempt

  • 100% company paid Health, Dental, Vision, and Life insurance + contributions to HSA account
