Join the team at Northwest Maritime as the Port Townsend Bay Tours Docent! Lead visitors and guests on tours of Port Townsend Bay from aboard the 40-foot passenger catamaran, Admiral Jack! You will meet & greet guests at the Northwest Maritime Welcome Center, then share information about Port Townsend’s history, wildlife, and points of interest while voyaging along our iconic coastline.


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Check-in & guide guests to summer boat tour location

  • Sell last-minute tickets through ticketing software

  • Along with Captain and Deckhand, ensure safety standards are met

  • Utilizing a script, provide a tour of Port Townsend's coastline from the water, including identifying points of interest and answering questions

  • Other duties as assigned


GENERAL OPERATIONS

While this is a summer position, the Port Townsend Bay Tours Docent will work as part of the NWM team to ensure smooth operations for the organization as a whole. This could include providing information to visitors to Northwest Maritime and helping out in projects and events that require all-hands-on-deck, to helping tie up a vessel coming into our dock because you happen to be standing there. We all pitch in for the heavy lifting now and then—sometimes this is metaphoric; occasionally we all have to actually help lift something heavy.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Responsible and able to represent NWM in a friendly and enthusiastic manner

  • Strong customer service skills

  • Comfortable using an iPad and other technology

  • Ability to stand while greeting guests, on land and on the boat while underway & leading tours 

  • Comfortable guiding and speaking to groups of up to 30 people


HELPFUL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience on the water

  • Knowledge of Port Townsend's history and points of interest

  • Knowledge of local wildlife, geology, and navigation

WORK LOCATION & SCHEDULE

  • Position is part-time, approximately 8-14 hours per week, onsite and on the passenger vessel Admiral Jack

  • Season Dates: Fridays & Saturdays June 28-August 31, 2024 & Wooden Boat Festival Weekend, September 6-8, plus some training prior to season start and specially scheduled private tours

  • NWM main offices are located at 431 Water St., Port Townsend, WA 98368

  • Reports to NWM Campus Director and/or Visitor Experience Supervisor


WAGE RANGE & BENEFITS

  • $18 - $19 per hour, non-exempt

  • Paid time off: accrues 1 hour of sick time for every 25 hours worked
