We offer a variety of hands-on learning opportunities for schools and student groups, ranging from day programs to overnight voyages. These programs include Salish Sea Expeditions, which are multi-day overnight science and sailing programs aboard the Schooner Zodiac; Puget Sound Adventures, which are single-day field trips aboard our floating science classroom, the Admiral Jack; and our local multi-day program, Maritime Discovery which introduces students to marine science, maritime skills and maritime trades.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Program Delivery 

  • Manage program coordinator and seasonal staff, including recruitment, hiring, and training in coordination with other program managers

  • Plan annual school program calendar and schedule fleet & facility use

  • Provide direct instruction when needed for all School Programs

  • Follow best practices and support NWMC's Antiracism & Inclusion statement

  • Collaborate with Deputy Program Director to assess, improve, and design school program curriculum

  • Manage program client relationships and subsequent contract negotiations

  • Implement program evaluation using data collection, logic models, and annual performance goals

  • Follow risk management protocols established within the Programs Division

  • Collaborate with Registrar to facilitate program registration paperwork & database management

Program Development & Outreach

  • Work to expand marketplace for school programs through regional outreach to schools, teachers, communities, and program partners

  • Work with Communications department to promote education programs through marketing materials and the website as needed

Budget Oversight & Accountability 

  • Manage expenses and revenues to meet budget

  • Use annual trends to build future budgets & inform program planning

  • Collaborate with Development department on program funding strategy through grant deliverables, philanthropic support, and evaluation of programs

GENERAL OPERATIONS

While this position’s primary responsibility is in implementing the school programs, the School Program Manager will work as part of the NWMC team to ensure smooth operations for the organization as a whole. This could include providing information to visitors to the Maritime Center and helping out in projects and events that require all-hands-on-deck, to helping tie up a vessel coming into our dock because you happen to be standing there. We all pitch in for the heavy lifting now and then—sometimes this is metaphoric; occasionally we all have to actually help lift something heavy.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • 2-4 years of experiential education program delivery with increased management responsibility over that time which included budget management and staff hiring & training

  • Commitment to a collaborative, solution-oriented approach to program development.  This includes a willingness to envision, develop, and implement equity-driven, student-centered, maritime-focused programming

  • Demonstrated ability to:

    • foster and sustain effective and efficient program and people operational systems

    • be highly organized, with the flexibility and energy to thrive in a dynamic environment

    • take initiative and ask for help 

  • Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and drug test 

  • Current First Aid & CPR (or training plan)


HELPFUL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Maritime education experience

  • Maritime industry experience from underway operations to marine science and research

  • Experience in innovative program development and program evaluation

  • USCG license 


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Moves maritime-related gear weighing up to 50 lbs to and from vehicles and boats

  • During the programming season, ascends/descends ladders in and around boats

  • Traverses uneven terrain and steep inclines to access boats

  • Frequently works in outdoor weather conditions

WORK LOCATION & SCHEDULE

  • Position will require mostly onsite work; however, some work may be done remotely in the off-season. Some work may be required on water vessels of varying sizes

  • Main NWMC Offices are located at 431 Water St., Port Townsend, WA 98368

  • Position is full-time, 40 hours/week

  • Reports to: Deputy Program Director


WAGE RANGE & BENEFITS

  • $27 - $30 per hour, non-exempt or exempt

  • 100% company paid Health, Dental, Vision, and Life insurance + contributions to HSA account
