Northwest Maritime, an organization dedicated to using maritime experiences to educate, inspire, and engage people in maritime culture, is seeking an Accountant to join our team. Our Port Townsend campus includes classrooms, a working boatshop, exhibits, a public library, lodging for program participants, and a community pier, all focused on fostering a connection to the maritime environment.


As a member of our five-person Accounting Team, you’ll manage key accounting functions and have opportunities to collaborate with others and work independently on your responsibilities. You'll also have the opportunity to participate in maritime activities, including learning how to sail. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

General Accounting:

  • Record standard monthly journal entries

  • Prepare ledger adjustments, including supporting documentation and appropriate descriptions

  • Prepare account reconciliations; research variances and prepare adjusting journal entries

  • Prepare monthly cost allocations

  • Annual State of Washington corporate and charitable registrations, exemption, and business licensing reports 

  • Sort and properly prepare financial and other organization records for archiving or shredding in accordance with the organization record retention policy

  • Assist with annual budgeting process

  • Assist with annual fiscal audit

  • Participate in accounting team functions during festivals and events

  • Ad Hoc analysis as requested

Accounts Receivable & Payable: 

  • Process monthly customer invoicing as per billing contracts

  • Process and record incoming payments from a variety of revenue streams as directed

  • Send customer statements and follow up with customer inquiries to facilitate collections and minimize write-offs

  • Reconcile web-generated sales and payments

  • Accrue unvouchered expenses at month-end

  • Preparation of year-end IRS forms 1099


GENERAL OPERATIONS

While the primary focus of this position is accounting, the Accountant works as part of the entire NWM team, ensuring smooth operations. As a growing non-profit, we all pitch in for the heavy lifting, whether it's participating in all-hands projects and events, assisting visitors, or occasionally doing some literal heavy lifting.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • 3+ years relevant experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting; additional years of non-profit experience may substitute for educational qualifications

  • Knowledge of Accounting, GAAP, FASB, and AICPA standards of conduct

  • Excellent computer skills including proficiency in ERP systems (such as Dynamics 365 Business Central or equivalent), Google Suite and/or Microsoft Office Suite

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as a part of a team

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills


HELPFUL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Familiarity with Non-Profit OMB regulations including circulars A-110, A-122 and A-133

  • Experience in database management

  • Working knowledge of maritime culture/boats/local marine trades

WORK LOCATION & SCHEDULE

  • Position will require mostly onsite work; some work may be done remotely after training.

  • NWM main offices are located at 431 Water St., Port Townsend, WA 98368

  • Position is full time, 40 hours/week

  • Reports to: Acting CFO


WAGE RANGE & BENEFITS

  • $25 - $30 per hour, non-exempt

  • 100% company paid Health, Dental, Vision, and Life insurance + contributions to HSA account
