The Northwest Maritime Center is a growing non-profit in the heart of downtown Port Townsend. This growth has increased the complexity of our organization and we are seeking an individual with a keen attention to detail to join our finance team. The Bookkeeper will assist with the day-to-day financial management and record-keeping of the organization. Reporting to the Controller, the bulk of the work will be focused on accurate accounting of accounts payable and vendor disbursements. You will thrive if you are comfortable learning new systems and have a willingness to lend a hand. 


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Vendor and Contract Disbursements:

  • Recording of vendor and contractor expenses in accordance with agreements and as authorized by management staff

  • Recording of corporate credit card transactions

  • Recording of transactions to specific projects, grants, and job codes, working through automated AP approval system, and in coordination with managers

  • Disbursing payments according to cash availability and established internal controls

  • Preparing monthly credit card reconciliation

  • Annual 1099 compliance reporting

  • Reporting and processing of payments to Federal, State, and local taxing agencies including Property and Business & Occupation Taxes as assigned

Accounts Receivable:

  • Prepare billings as required monthly for 48° North advertising and any supplemental program billings as may be required

  • Follow up with customers on past due invoices including sending statements and making phone calls for payment arrangements

General:

  • Annual corporate license filings

  • Monthly B&O tax filings

  • Coordinate with finance team to prepare for annual fiscal audit and assist auditors while on-site

  • Assist with the recruitment and training of Event G-Team volunteers during Wooden Boat Festival and the Race to Alaska

  • Other Duties as Assigned


GENERAL OPERATIONS

While this position’s primary responsibility is in bookkeeping, the Bookkeeper will work as part of the NWMC team to ensure smooth operations for the organization as a whole. This could include providing information to visitors to the Maritime Center and helping out in projects and events that require all-hands-on-deck, to helping tie up a vessel coming into our dock because you happen to be standing there. We all pitch in for the heavy lifting now and then—sometimes this is metaphoric; occasionally we all have to actually help lift something heavy.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • 2+ years of relevant experience

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Computer skills including proficiency in accounting software packages such as Quickbooks or Business Central, Microsoft Office, and Google Suite

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as with a team

  • Flexibility, patience, and a desire to learn


HELPFUL QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Two-year degree in Accounting or closely related field

  • Previous non-profit experience

  • Working knowledge of maritime culture/boats/local marine trades


WORK LOCATION & SCHEDULE

  • Position will require onsite work; occasional work may be done remotely upon approval of Controller

  • Main NWMC Offices are located at 431 Water St., Port Townsend, WA 98368

  • Position is part-time to full-time, 20-40 hours/week

  • Reports to: Controller


WAGE RANGE & BENEFITS

  • $22 - $26 per hour, non-exempt
