Maritime High School (MHS) launched in the fall of 2021. A student-centered, equity-driven, maritime-focused endeavor, MHS is a unique school that is a collaborative project of Highline Public Schools (HPS), Northwest Maritime Center (NWMC), Duwamish River Community Coalition (DRCC), and the Port of Seattle. As a newly launched school entering its third year, MHS is designed with community, family, and learner input.
MHS curriculum is divided into two distinct phases. Spanning 9th and 10th grades, the Explore phase has students exploring a variety of academic subjects, maritime experiences, and career paths. Then the Launch phase where students choose a focus area and engage in classroom instruction, internship experiences, and career pathways that prepare them for the next steps in their career development including post-secondary education.
The Maritime Education Coordinator (MEC) works as a leader and is comfortable facilitating learning in multiple content areas, 21st century and maritime skills, and collaborating with Maritime Industry Partners. NWMC Staff serve as maritime instructional leaders implementing positive youth development practices and share collective responsibility for the student support and social-emotional learning of students.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Educational/instructional approach
Design and implement authentic and engaging maritime-focused projects through a project-based learning approach aligned to MHS competencies, academic and industry standards, and the MHS maritime curriculum
Commitment to a mastery-based instructional method and assessment of the learning process that engages young people in academic skill development and content knowledge based on the demonstration of skills in authentic projects
Support and facilitate the development of student industry and broad workforce readiness skills in projects, career-connected learning, and mentorships
Establish and maintain a collaborative relationship with MHS teachers to design and co-facilitate meaningful projects that blend academics, industry/workforce skills, and social-emotional learning that culminate in exhibitions of learning at regular intervals
Collaborate with Maritime Education Manager (MEM), industry partners, and MHS teachers to design, facilitate, assess, and report on students learning aligned to the MHS competencies and instructional goals and the Maritime Curriculum Framework, specifically Field Work Experiences (FWEs)
Collaborate, and maintain positive relationships with MHS industry partners to identify and design high-interest industry-relevant projects
Instructional experiences / direct instruction
Implement FWEs
Coordinate with the MHS 9th and 10th-grade band teams on FWE planning
Ensure completion of the 9th and 10th grade FWE paperwork with MHS staff
Work with the MEM to align funding sources with FWE deliverables
Ensure alignment with MHS instructional goals and safety practices
Collaborate with MHS Special Ed Coordinator and teachers to ensure services, accommodations, and modifications are provided to students with learning disabilities and language acquisition needs
Provide inclusive instruction to differentiate, accommodate, and modify for all students
NWMC Program Team Member
Work with the MEM to support program logistics and maintenance needs of the program gear and boats as needed
Collaborate to support the growth of a physically and emotionally safe NWMC program and MHS school culture through participation in professional development, staff training, regular staff meetings, and collaborative planning times
Additional duties
Participate in community engagement and student recruitment activities including 2 to 3 weekend or evening events per quarter
Participate, as needed, in the management of students during the time that they are out of class and on campus, following all safety and risk management protocols
Facilitate project spaces that are open to staff, community partners, and visitors who wish to learn about and experience the MHS school model
Support grant reporting and writing efforts by providing necessary data tracking and content as needed and directed
Other duties as assigned
GENERAL OPERATIONS
While this position’s primary responsibility is in creating transformative maritime experiences, the Maritime Education Coordinator will work as part of the NWMC team to ensure smooth operations for the organization as a whole. This could include providing information to visitors to the Maritime Center and helping out in projects and events that require all-hands-on-deck, to helping tie up a vessel coming into our dock because you happen to be standing there. We all pitch in for the heavy lifting now and then—sometimes this is metaphoric; occasionally we all have to actually help lift something heavy.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience and ability to work with and understand the developmental nature of our young people with a focus on developing their assets
Demonstrate through previous work experience:
organizational ability
professional accountability to tasks and projects
organizational systems implementation and creation and experience in Google Suite
communication and collaboration skills
relationship building with students and families
Work offers are contingent on a satisfactory pre-employment background check and drug test. Throughout employment with Northwest Maritime Center, certain boat-related program employees will be enrolled in a random drug testing program administered by the Maritime Consortium, in compliance with the Coast Guard mandatory drug testing regulation, as contained in 46 CFR part 16.
Current CPR & FA certification
Maritime education experience on the water, especially working with a variety of youth in experiential and alternative learning environments.
Knowledge and understanding of Maritime skills
Valid WA State Driver’s License
HELPFUL QUALIFICATIONS
Bilingual Spanish and/or ASL
Experience working with English Language Learners
Experience with Positive Youth Development and supporting the social and emotional needs of students
Knowledge and understanding of Maritime skills
Experience with Project Based Learning, Performance Assessment, and/or Mastery-based Assessment
USCG License
Experience or certification as a paddling instructor or guide
Experience teaching shop safety and woodworking
Trailer towing experience
Boat towing experience

WORK LOCATION & SCHEDULE
Position will require onsite work at 615 S 200th St, Des Moines, WA 98198 and reports to campus or work location a minimum of 30 minutes before the start of instruction
Main NWMC Offices are located at 431 Water St., Port Townsend, WA 98368
Position is full-time, 40 hours/week
Reports to: MHS Maritime Education Manager
WAGE RANGE & BENEFITS
$25-$27 per hour, non-exempt
