The Learn to Sail program at the NWMC has been around for 20 + years.  However, in the last 10 years, it has grown tremendously and become a key part of our summer programming. The Adult Sailing Instructor is responsible for teaching US Sailing Certified Basic Keelboat classes on board our 2 keelboats (Cal 20 and Cal 25).  Each student graduates with a US Sailing membership, a logbook, and a certification.  There are up to 4 students on board in each class.

We love working with team members who:

  • Are strong leaders and can be flexible in dynamic situations.
  • Good listeners to the needs of adult students and able to communicate clearly.
  • Can be an outstanding role model for the participants and work collaboratively.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teach daily lesson plans in keeping with the class content as presented in the program description and under the guidance of the Waterfront Programs Manager
  • Ensure that all boats and safety equipment are prepared for each day of programming, in cooperation with the Programs Operation Coordinator – fuel for outboards, charged VHFs, and inflatables pumped up.
  • Frequent communication with Waterfront Programs Manager and/or the Summer Program Coordinator as needed
  • Ensure and maintain an emotionally and physically safe, fun, and educational environment for all participants
  • Facilitating a shoreside program in inclement weather
  • Participation in the Staff Training (date to be determined),  pre-season set up, and postseason tear down of the program
  • Other related duties as assigned by the Waterfront Programs Manager

GENERAL OPERATIONS

While this position’s primary responsibility is in sailing instruction, the Adult Sailing Instructor will work as part of the NWMC team to ensure smooth operations for the organization as a whole. This could include providing information to visitors to the Maritime Center and helping out in projects and events that require all-hands-on-deck, to helping tie up a vessel coming into our dock because you happen to be standing there. We all pitch in for the heavy lifting now and then—sometimes this is metaphoric; occasionally we all have to actually help lift something heavy.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • 2 + years of experience teaching in a sail training environment
  • Current US Sailing Keelboat Instructor or USCG six-pack license
  • Current US Sailing membership (NWMC will assist with gaining membership if not current)
  • Knowledge of safe boating practices
  • Basic outboard experience
  • Washington State Boaters Card
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification or training plan
  • CDC “Heads Up” online concussion training or training plan
  • Work offers are contingent on a satisfactory pre-employment background check and drug test.
