Admiral Jack,  a 40’ power cat, is operated by Northwest Maritime in the summer months as a passenger vessel providing historical and nature tours on Port Townsend Bay. The Summer Deckhand will work with the Captain to ensure the safe and proper management of Admiral Jack, and to help provide a memorable experience for the guests.


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work with the Captain to safely operate the vessel, including line handling and basic maintenance

  • Ensure the safety of passengers under the direction of the Captain

  • Create a friendly atmosphere and engage the public during sails, offering interpretive information while underway

  • Other duties as assigned


GENERAL OPERATIONS

While this position’s primary responsibility is in vessel operations, the Admiral Jack Summer Deckhand will work as part of the NWM team to ensure smooth operations for the organization as a whole. This could include providing information to visitors to Northwest Maritime and helping out in projects and events that require all-hands-on-deck, to helping tie up a vessel coming into our dock because you happen to be standing there. We all pitch in for the heavy lifting now and then—sometimes this is metaphoric; occasionally we all have to actually help lift something heavy.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • 18 Years or older

  • Previous Deckhand experience or training: line handling, basic navigation, emergency drills

  • Current first aid/CPR certification 

  • Enthusiasm for working outdoors in all types of weather 

  • Ability to lift and carry gear up to 50lbs 

  • Proactive work ethic: willingness to help in any aspects of programming as necessary 

  • Ability to pass pre-employment background check and drug test


HELPFUL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with motor vessels >30 ft 

  • Experience with marine engines

  • Main NWM Offices are located at 431 Water St., Port Townsend, WA 98368

  • Position is part-time, seasonal,  12-15hours/week, Fridays & Saturdays, June 28-September 8th

  • Reports to: Waterfront Programs Manager


WAGE RANGE & BENEFITS

  • $21-23 per hour, non-exempt 

  • Paid time off: 1 hour of sick time accrued per every 25 hours worked
